The short version
  • Legal AI startup Harvey announced a $550 million Series D funding round, raising its valuation to $15.5 billion, up from $11 billion in March 2026.
  • The funding round was co-led by Lightspeed Venture Partners and Diffusion, a new growth fund founded by former Coatue partner Kris Fredrickson.
  • Alongside the round, Harvey announced the acquisition of Guardrails AI and the launch of its first proprietary post-trained model, Harvey Tenet.

Harvey, the dominant artificial intelligence platform for the legal sector, has closed a massive $550 million funding round, catapulting its valuation to $15.5 billion (with some sources citing $15.6 billion). The round represents a dramatic surge from its $11 billion valuation in March 2026 and a ten-fold increase from its $1.5 billion valuation in July 2024. The latest round was co-led by Lightspeed Venture Partners and Diffusion, a newly established growth firm founded by former Coatue investor Kris Fredrickson. A syndicate of elite investors participated, including Sequoia Capital, Kleiner Perkins, Andreessen Horowitz, Coatue, and Goldman Sachs Alternatives.

The capital injection arrives as Harvey experiences explosive commercial traction, reportedly crossing $400 million in Annual Recurring Revenue (ARR). The platform is currently utilized by approximately 80% of the top 100 law firms in the United States and serves corporate legal divisions at five of the Fortune 10 companies. Harvey's software automates complex, high-stakes legal workflows including contract analysis, corporate due diligence, and litigation preparation. The startup has raised over $1.5 billion in total capital since its founding in late 2022, making it one of the most heavily capitalized vertical AI enterprises in the world.

In a strategic move to verticalize its technology stack and reduce its dependence on third-party API providers like OpenAI, Harvey also announced the acquisition of Guardrails AI, marking its fourth acquisition of 2026. Simultaneously, the company unveiled 'Harvey Tenet,' its first proprietary model. Tenet is a post-trained model built on top of Moonshot AI's open-weight Kimi K3 architecture, specialized for complex legal analysis and reasoning. The shift toward proprietary modeling allows Harvey to guarantee higher data sovereignty and security to its conservative legal client base, while drastically reducing its underlying API inference expenses.

Why it matters

Harvey's $15.5 billion valuation highlights the immense market premium placed on highly specialized vertical AI platforms with locked-in enterprise workflows. By acquiring Guardrails AI and launching 'Harvey Tenet' based on open weights, Harvey is leading an industry-wide pivot away from renting general-purpose U.S. cloud APIs toward owning custom, secure, post-trained models, establishing a blueprint for high-security enterprise AI deployment.

What this desk does not yet know

Will Harvey's launch of the proprietary Tenet model allow it to maintain its near-monopoly on top law firms, or will competitors like Thomson Reuters claw back market share?
