The short version
  • Adobe has acquired Indian marketing intelligence startup Rilo in a team and IP acquisition deal, TechCrunch reported on September 2.
  • Rilo specializes in automated marketing workflows and optimizing brand visibility on AI search platforms like ChatGPT and Gemini, raising $1 million prior to the deal.

Adobe has acquired Rilo, an Indian marketing intelligence and AI optimization startup, through a licensing and team acquisition agreement, TechCrunch reported on September 2. The deal marks Adobe's second acquisition of an Indian AI startup, following its purchase of generative video platform Rephrase.ai in late 2023.

Founded by Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) batchmates Georgi Boby and Dhruv Jaglan, Rilo specializes in automating marketing workflows and monitoring competitor activity. Crucially, the startup developed tools to help brands track, analyze, and optimize how they are indexed and recommended by conversational AI platforms like ChatGPT and Gemini. Prior to the acquisition, the startup had raised $1 million in seed funding at a $10 million valuation from investors including Peak XV, DeVC, and Day Zero Ventures.

Under the terms of the agreement, Rilo will shut down its independent software-as-a-service offering. The startup's intellectual property and its entire six-member team will join Adobe's Customer Experience (CX) and marketing cloud divisions to integrate their automated workflows directly into Adobe's enterprise product suite.

Why it matters

Adobe's acquisition of Rilo highlights the growing importance of 'AI Search Optimization' (AISO) as a critical marketing frontier. As consumers transition from traditional search engines to conversational agents, brands must ensure their products are correctly indexed and recommended by LLMs. By acquiring Rilo, Adobe is positioning itself to offer enterprise customers built-in tools to manage their reputation and visibility inside the training data and active retrieval caches of the world's leading AI engines.
